ACTING IN THE 17th AND 18th CENTURY:
After witnessing an opera production that used a reconstructed 18th-century acting style, way back in the mid-80’s, Javier López Piñón decided to research this style himself. It took him three years to study all the known sourcebooks and the modern literature on the subject.

Since then, he has used this rhethorical acting style on occasion in many of his early-music productions (see: Cavalli, Mozart, Paisiello) but only if he could find a dramatic justification for it.
In Cavalli’s La Calisto e.g. the gods acted out their dialogues in this style, but the gods only, not the demi-gods (who tried to imitate the style of the gods) and certainly not the mere mortals in this wonderful piece.
In Paisiello’s Il filosofi immaginari, which was performed at the Hermitage Theatre, it is only the would-be philosopher Argatifondidas (who is none other than the young lover in disguise) that acts in the rhethorical style.
With 3rd year drama-school students at Theatre School, he works for several weeks on french classicism (Corneille and Racine), applying the appropriate acting style, and furthermore, he has been invited as a specialist in this field to work with theatre groups like Toneelgroep Amsterdam (when they staged Vondel’s Gysbreght van Amstel, directed by Rieks Swarte and again when they staged Corneille’s L’Illusion Comique, directed by Gerard-jan Rijnders). Huis aan de Amstel invited him when they worked on Calderón (directed by Liesbeth Coltof), so did the Firma Rieks Swarte when they worked on a staged version of Frankenstein (directed by Rieks Swarte). Het Bostheater invited him for their production of Shakespeare’s Lear (directed by Frances Sanders) and he gave further workshops at the Early Music Festival in Utrecht and both the Leiden and Amsterdam University.
